How to make a pregnant belly cake for a baby shower
I remember how back in 2009 right at the start of my cake making career I decided to explore all sorts of cake designs. Naturally, there is a tendency to start from obvious shapes; circles and squares etc but I was just not going to stop there. A good customer turned friend contacted me for a unique baby shower cake and as is the case for most cake designers, I turned to google (my adopted uncle). Among the top results was a pregnant belly baby shower cake. Need I add more?

Over the years I have made quite a few of these. However, I did discover that baking in either a pyrex or half soccer ball yielded a very dense cake. There are some people out there who do not mind their cakes this way but for me, a sponge has to be light and airy. In a bid to achieve this, I started baking and carving layers of sponge. This was a bit wasteful so I continued experimenting till I eventually  got my eureka moment. This is how I make a pregnant belly cake for a baby shower. I bake a sponge in a quarter full pyrex/soccer ball pan as well as layers of round cakes then trim to size; less waste and perfect results always. A pictorial can be found on our Facebook Page. Enjoy!
